CHINAMAN FOUND GUILTY

Joe Hoe, forty-five years of age, a Chinese, pleaded guilty to-day to attempting to obtain £1&0 by false pretences from a, Palmerston North bookmaker named Williams. . The method adopted, it was stated, was the posting of a letter by Hoe to himself at Wellington with the address lightly pencilled. This lie rubbed out after delivery and re-addressed the envelope to the book-maker, went up to Palmerston North, and used the envelope to post nets after the result of the first race at Trentham. The fact of the envelope bearing both the Wellington and Palmerston North .cancellation, however, caused Williams to query it. Hoc was sentenced to the Supreme Court for sentence.
