SHIPPING SUBSIDY
BRITAIN’S UNFAIR POSITION

LONDON, December 12.
The President of the Board of Trade Rt. Hon. W. C. Runciman, speaking at Newcastle, estimated, that foreign exchequers were paying nearly thirty millions sterling in cash annually for the support of truth in the contention, be said, that it was unfair to throw trade between Britain, India and Australia open to vessels of all nations when British and Scandinavian ships were the only ones not receiving Government- assistance. Eventually the most efficient ships would win. In the meantime the taxpayers of all countries would have to bear an enormous burden.
SUBSIDY MAY RESULT
LONDON, December 12. The “Daily Teelgraph” says: Mr Runciman is expected to make a statement in the House of Commons on Wednesday to- the effect that Cabinet does not favour a policy of shipping subsidies, but that it is prepared to consider an amendment to tile navigation laws with a view to achieving the desired result. In the Commons, Mr Burgin t-okl a questioner that approximate? 40 percent of foreign shipping entering British ports belongs to countries where the Government assisted shipping by grants, loans and subsidies.
