LIQUOR DEMAND
DRY REPEAL IN UNITED STATES (United Press Association-By Electno . Telegraph— Copyright). NEW YORK,< December 6. Prohibition repeal continued to hold a prominent place in the day’s news. One important development was a rtport that the President was seriously considering .a Federal Government -monopolisation and taxa. ! tion on liquor with a' refund to the consumer States in order to obviate j the danger of such, high taxation by j the States which might attempt to j rescue their falling budgets by overburdening his new source of: revenue, l ns if would again give encouragement to bootlegging. > T.
The restoration of mailing- yights for liquor is also' being sought. The availability, ' to-day, of boei> of higher alcholic content than-3.2 ' somehow was not received with as much e:i» thusiasm as had been expected, since the price was much higher and smaller glasses served.- - Ratification of repeal by Maine, the thirty-seventh State, almost went without notice to-day. Various cities reported that the retail liquor stores were stormed by purchasers anxious for supplies, which all day flowed from the store houses. In New York, the police were called out to keep order among tlie buyers. The steamship companies featuring the short Antilles cruises have been competed to cancel’ -many sailings on account, of the diminution of passengers, who now need not go on the high seas to obtain the desired liquors. “Rum row” vessels principally from Canadian ports, are reported to be returning to their bases.
