SWIMMING

HOKITIKA AMATEUR CLUB. As the result of a conference between the Hokitika -Swimming Chib and the Borough Council, considerable improvements are being carried out at- the swimming baths.

The abnormally vet and cold weather during the last three swimming seasons has played havoc with the wooden planking round the bath, and also the -big grandstand. All this .lias proved so ■unsafe -that they are being dismantled immediately. Work has now commenced and the planking will be replaced 'by concrete, while a -new. but slightly smaller, stand will take the place of the old one.

A new dressing shed, 20ft. bv 18ft.. for the convenience of ladies and school girls is being constructed. This-wiU be divided into various .Hired cubicles, one extra large -one being used for housing quite a number of small girls. While the Club wishes to popularise the bath, and to keep faith with the public at nil times, it has been found necessary, owing to several complaints reaching the Club officials, lo make a. fixed charge for admission inside the gate, this is, by season ticket, or 3d, which is the price of a single swim. Exception will o-f course be made in the case of parents wishing to see h o w their children are excelling in the -art. The cost of building improvements -are being borne by the Club, who hope to get sufficient patronage to reward them in their well deserved mission.
