GOLD PROSPECTING
THE HOKITIKA ASSOCIATION
Tile Hokitika Prospecting Association, which has been operating, by helping the smaller prospectors in the district for some twelve months, is temporarily held up owing to the boring ' plant) being embedded tiki difficult ground m the Humphries district. The prospectors sunk to a depth of 52 feet without any results accruing, when it was decided to withdraw the pipes. This proved a more difficult job than was supposed as the pipes held fast in the sticky ground. Various methods to capture the pipes and shoe have been applied;'but without Success sb far, and there is a danger that the Association losing them altogether. This is rather a pity as the Association, which has been operating, by ion lias moved along quietly, helpiilg the nion in their arduous tasks, always associated with the milling industry, ..During its opm‘l,l thins, the Association has been subsidising at the'htto of Is Od per foot, numbers of ventures entailing an expenditure of £3OO for 4000 feet of tunnels and shafts, Besides this the borer has operated at Back Creek, Ross Road, Kanieri, Craig’s Freehold and Upper Arahura.
'While the actual gold returns have not been of any magnitude, the information gained has been of valuable assistance to the Association in passing on to others. .Quite a number of miners have struck payable wash at the present price of gold, due to the assistance given them by the Association, enabling them to tide over a very difficult period.
