THE BANKS’ GOLD
MR COATES’ CHALLENGE.
LONDON ANSWER RECEIVED
WELLINGTON, November 17
The challenge which the Minister for Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) issued to the Associated Banks to deny that certain comments on the transfer of their gold to the central reserve Wank, which were published in “The Times,” London, had been prepared by them and printed by arrangement was answered to-day by the banks. The banks sent-a cable message to London, conveying Mr Coates’ question, and received the following re* ply : —
Referring to. your telegram, you are authorised flatly to contradict that the comment of “The Times” was prepared by the Associated Banks, or any one of them i n any shape or form. It was written by “The Times” on the facts well known here, and represents the opinion of “The Times” and other
opinions in this country. Mr Coates said to-night that he had nothing to add’ to' what lie had already said on the matter.
