WESTLAND MINERS’ ASSOCIATION

; The 'committee of the Westland .Miners' Association met in the Public Hall, Woodstock, last Friday evening, th.& .chairman (Mr A. Muir), presiding. The chairman congratulated the, delegates in the several districts on the ./increased membership obtained. It, wafe decided that the committee meet monthly at Woodstock The -secretary (Mr N. Warren), who at the inaugural meeting took up the position temporarily, tendered his resignation, explaining that oAving to the fact of his often being -away from town, he found if. -difficult to arrange, meetings. The resignation avas accepted Avith .appreciation of his past interest, and regret at the necessity at relinquishing office.

Mr W. SurgenOp -was elected secretary. Mr Warren to continue a member of the committee.

.complaint was received of the state of the road at Back Greek to miners’ timber reserve. Members expressed the necessity for urgent -repairs. It Avas resolved to write to -the Westland .County Council on the matter. The position of miners Avorking under the unemployment subsidy was discussed, members expressing the opinion that all men working under this scheme 'should receive the same treatment-, made to prospect the Humphreys-Blue 'Spur district, the committee claimed that the same remuneration, 22s 6d for -single and 37s 6d for married men, should be paid to all Av-orkers irrespective of their location.

It was resolved that the mining executive he written to urging the appointment of a member of the committee to the mining executive a s a helpful assistance to both bodies. Appreciation was expressed at the efforts of the Member for the district on behalf of the miners, particularly with regard the 5 per cent deduction of the value of gold won. for the repayment of equipment advanced. It was resolved to write Mr O’Brien, thanking him for his interest in the matter, and to - assure him . that- despite th> Minister’s reply the miner s consider this imposition is a decided hardship. - . .
