INJURED AT SEA

AUCKLAND, November 18-
When in mid-Tasman the Oceanic liner Monterey, which arrived this morning, ivas called u.p by the Amerimaiii freighter Golden Cross, which desired medical .attention for an injured seaman.' The message Avag received late on Wednesday afternoon, and by arrangement the ships met the folloAving evening at six o'clock, -525 miles Avesfc of North Cape. A- boat was put off from the Monterey and the injured man Avas lowered on a stretcher to the beat. He av? 6 rowed to the Monterey, where he was hauled aboard -and placed in the ship’s hospital. Within half ■an hour both ships were on their A\ay again.
The injured man, Christian Gar-dell, aged sixty-nine went doAvn a. ladder in the engine-room, and Avas apparently overcome by heat, ais later he Avas found lying on top of -a superheater. He AA-as burned so seA r erely that if Avas feared he might die before port 'could be .reached. As the freighter carried no -doctor, it Avas decided to call for help. Gardell Ava-s -removed to * hospital this morning. ,'His ’ condition |s rp*'ported to be 'satisfactory.
