AUCKLAND COUNCIL DECISION
(Per Press Association—Copyright).
AUCKLAND,, November 17,
By eleven votes to nine, the Auckland' City Council passed a motion to restore the ten per cent cut in wages of employees working' under the local bodies’ labourers’ award. The Council then decided on the casting vote of the Mayor (Mr Hutchison), that the finance committee should invesigate the financial: position and report upon the possibility of taking action during the remainder of the financial year. . ; The Mayor had appealed to . the mover of the first motion to withdraw it, because the Council had already budgetted for the year, and had decided it was. preferable to pay smaller wages to, more men than to dismiss some and . pay full wages to the remainder. . Y' V i . ‘
The mover of the motion, while recognising that the Mayor was sympathetic to wage raising refused to withdraw the motion;
On the second division, ail Independent Labour member, Mr.' Bloodworth, voted against the. offical Labour section, on the ground that': the decision would affect other employees besides the men under the award.
