There is no possibility of a giant el money being made by the Commonwealth Government to Flight-Lieuten-ant C. 'P. Ulm in recognition of his record-breaking flight to Australia. Although the Government 'appreciates the value of Flight-Lieutenant Ulm’s flight and hi.s skill as an airman, it is feared that to make him a grant would establish an awkward precedent.

Some of Australia’s most distinguished airmen, including Sir Hubert Wilkin's, dhe explorer ,halve I never been made grants of money, and if Flight-Lieutenant Ulm received financial reward there would be other airmen with strong claims. The Government may, however, recognise his feat by conferring upon him a higher honorary Air Force rank. Flight-Lieutenant Ulm may he promoted to the rank of Wing Commander or higher.

VALUE OF AERODROME.

DANNEVIRTUE, November 14

The value of established aerodromes and landing <g|rou;nds ,ajlong the air routes of the Dominion is fully appreciated by the Defence Department. It is not proposed to station aircraft away from existing air force stations in peace time. Aircraft will be located in wartime at stations in accordance with the demands of the situation.

The Minister of. Defence so advised the Chamber of Commerce in reply to representations to use the local aerodrome base for civil and defence purposes.
