The* most serious conflagration for years occurred at 11 o’clock this morning when the N.Z. Shipping Coy’s sheds covering a large area, were totally destroyed by fire. Only the efforts of a volunteer ‘brigade saved the residence adjoining. Approximately 1,000 bales of fibre were in {.he s tore. No one was in the shed at the time of the origin, which is thought 'to he internal combustion. The outbreak was not noticed until, the whole building was a mass of flames. A dense black smoke poured out of the ventilators' ’and the . heat was terrific; The whole building was reduced to ruins within .an hour. It is a serious loss to the Foxton-Canterbury Steam j Ship Coy., which lost £2OO of salvage,' gear housed iri the building. Insurances are not available.
