APPOINTMENT

DUNEDIN, October 19
It was decided yesterday at the monthly meeting of the Otago High Schoo] Board of Governors at Dunedin, to appoint Air Harold J. Kidson, Ar.A.y B.Sc., Principal of the Hutt Valley High School, to the position of Rector of the Otago Boys High School, in place of Air Morrell, who is retiring. There were 22 applications for the position, including two from England and one from Australia. Air Kidsoii was horn -at Nelson in 1887, and was educated at Nelson College.
FIRE DAMAGE

Damage estimated at £IOOO was done by a fire in the premises of Winga’-e and Coy. Ltd., hardware, merchants, -Queen SC, about 4.30 this morning. The -back part- of the -building was a m-ass of flames when the brigade arrived, -but by strenuous work the outbreak -was confined to -a packing room ,and basement. The., packing roam was piled -with coils of rope and other merchandise, and was completely gutted. The flames reached some of the interior walls an-d charred them, -and .intense -beat and smoke -also caused ’damage inside the shop. Insurances -of £25,000 on building and stock, -are held by the .Southern Union.
