Walter Frederick - .Dempsey, 26, > labourer, was. charged before the magistrate (Air Mosley),- ’that’ -in' September: ,2, ho abducted a girl aged *l6 "years and '5. mouths, against the wishes’ of her parents. The police'said Dempsey, a married man, met- the girl in the Botanical Gardens, .where lie was, working, twelve months ago. Later they made up their minds t-o leave home. On September 2, they went to Raugiora, Kaikomva, -'Blenheim and thence to the North Island, living as man and wife . The girl gave evidence that her home life, was unhappy. She had had every intention of clearing out from home, whether she went with Dempsey or not. The Magistrate said Dempsey seemed to have reasonable grounds for believing flie girl was 18 years of age. Taking all the flacts into corisitljsratkm, he thought he was justified in dismissing the case-
