A RECEPTION
TO MRS McCOMBS, M.P. BY WOMEN OF NEW ZEALAND (Per Pre 8S Association, Copyright). WELLINGTON ,Sep. 27. Representatives of over fifty women’ organisations extended a reception to Mrs E. R. McCombs, the first New Zealand woman to become a member of parliament. The function was very largely attended. The speakers included Miss Mary Richmond, the first woman to sit on a public b dy in New Zealand, Mrs McVicar, J.P., who is a member of Wellington Hospital Board, Mrs Peter Fraser, Miss Mac Gill, the first woman president of New Zealand Educational Institute.
Replying, Mrs McCombs said her election, if it had done nothing else, had fixed attention on the fact that it was possible for women to sit in parliament, which was in itself a step forward. She had received over a thousand letters from women of every shade of political opinion and every religious denomination, congratulating her on her achievement.
