The unusual ease of a civil claim in which neither the plaintiff nor the defendant could accurately state the amount of the debt owing arose during the hearing by Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., of a civil action in the Napier Magistrate’s Court, The claim was for £2O, but is was stated by the plaintiff, a dental surgeon, that all his hooks had been lost in the- earthquake, and although particulars of the debt had been supplied to the defendant, these could not now be produced. The defendant was also unable to say how much he owed the plaintiff, and judgment was entered by consent in favour of the plaintiff for the sum of £8 los 6d and costs.

The success of any sporting tournament, depends just as much on the social side as on the performances of the players, and if one were to judge the present West Coast Championships by tlie crowning social function of the tournament, namely the cabaret in the Soldiers’ Hall last evening, then the tournament may be voted a successful affair for that reason alone. Run on lines similar to the cabarets held previously this winter, last evening’s function was well supported by local members, visiting players and friends, and was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. It had originally been intended to present the trophies last evening but owing to tlie play being interfered with by rain this was not possible. Excellent music was played by the Happiness Boys’ Dance Band, while an attractive feature of the evening was the contribution of the following items: —Dance, Miss Darby, Song, Mr C. Wright, and ballet, dance duo, Mr H. Burns and Miss L. Staines; Song and chorus, Mrs A. E, Perry and ballet; and a haka by local Royal and Ancient “warriors.”
