OBITUARY

HENRY KARNBACH, AETAT 91.

The death of ono of the oldest settlers in the district took place yesterday afternoon at his homestead, Lower Kokatahi, when Mr Henry Karnbach passed awc.y. The deceased was . native of Prussia, where he was born in 1842, and he was therefore 91 yeaie of age. In 1859 he e a me out to th* colonies in the “Prince of the Sea” ■landing .at Melbourne. He spent four years there quartz end alluvial mining at Bendigo .and other mining centres. In 1863 he came to New Zealand, fol- ~ lowing his trade of a butcher at the 1 Dunstan and Hamilton diggings. In . 1865 Mr IKarabnch c me to the Coast, where he established himself in a business at Ross which he successfully carried on for 18 years when he removed to his present homestead whi’h he had purchased in the sixties. Since then be has been a rouble resident of tho district, taking a keen interest in the general welfare. Mr Karnbach was chairman of directors of Kokatahi Dairy Factory 'Company for several years, r,nd was treasurer of the Westland Agricultural .and Pastoral Association in earlier years. For several ye\rs the deceased has boon an invalid,/but-lie was always of a most cheery disposition and took a keen interest l in passing events. Of late, .his infirmities were more pro*-"' nounced but he continued to have his full faculties to the. end which ultimately came very peacefully, Mr Karnbach married a daughter of the late Mr and Mrg John Graham, early settlers of Kokatahi, but lost hey some yea-rc, ago. A large family w.’s reared and there are left nine daughters (Mrs James; Davidson of Lower Hutt, Mrs Dumphy of Teimika, Mi’s H. Stapleton of Hokitika. Mrs P. Jones of Kokatahi, Mrs J. C. Hende of Gladstone Siding, Mrs W. Morris of Kokatahi, Mrs A. Meharry of Kokatahi, Mrs 0. Amberger of Methveil and ’Miv 5 F. "Amberger of Kokatahi)) and one son (Mr Henry Karnbach >o.f Papamui, Christchurch). ■One son, Carl, died at the .front whde on service. • A .large number of grandchildren are also left. There will be general regret expressed at tho passing of a sterling settler, and widespread sympathy will be extended to the members of thefamily, the community being the poorer for his passing.

JAMES SMITH

The death took .place on Thursday at Auckland of Mr .Fines Smith at the age of 71 years. The deceased was a popular member of the staff . o,f the T,a.nds and Survey ’Department at Hokitika up to some thirty years 0-ga;’ for many years being Crown Lands ranger, and formerly cn the purvey staff. He was a native of Victoria. He was transferred from Hokitika to Auckland where he remained on the staff of the . Denartment until he retired. some years ago. His wife predeceased • him last year, and one daughter is left. Deceased was very popular in this dto* F' trict and a large cirole of friends will Jr • hear with regret of his death, - JAMES McVICAR, ...• The death .occurred at the Christchurch Hospital, on Wednesday, of James Me Vicar,, a native* of Stafford, aged 56 years. The deceased left New Zealand wi'h the Third Tunnelling Corps, and served to the completion of the war.

REV. FATHER MAHONEY.

WELLINGTON. August 26

The death occurred yesterday of the Rev. Father Stanislaus 'Mahoney,' SAL Bom at Londo n in 1866. Father Mahoney came to New Zealand with his pc.rents. He was ordained to the priesthood in the year 1893. Subsequently he was engaged working at Christchurch, Hokitika, Nelson and Wanganui. He was appointed Parish Priest of St. 'Mary of the Angels, Wellington, in 1918, where he has been usince. He took the chief part in the erection of the beautiful church, of St. Mary of ’the Angels in Boulcott Street. ./
