AND STILL MORE. One of your • correspondents mention,.; .Miss Ellis’ school. The writer was a pupil there and lias a letter by herself December 19, 1871 at the closing of the school for Christmas, each pupil wrote in neat pointed characters to “Dear Mamma” and “Miss Ellis sends kind regards.” It gave great pleasure to hear of the hospital ward named in memory of her, the good, kind, patient lady. We had scripture lessons, one—James list chapter is remembered as being a favourite of hers.
Mr James Scott, M.A., whose sue- . j cess as tile headmaster of the liyterian Academy is remembered by many. A perfect gentleman and well s, beloved. Amongst other pupils the writer remembers Tom ami Harry ' Marr. The latter lost the sight of one eye, *as we all eagerly rushed to the windows to see a prisoner (of the, Levey gang) rushing past clown by Macnamara’s second hand shop. One of the hoys carried his pen with him and the nib pierced Harry’s eye. Other pupils, Misses E. and S. Rozzi and their brother, William Shane (who died at Nelson years ago), Charles and Alfred Holmes, the Oliver brothers, Bob Virtue, Jane King, Edith and Tammy Kennaugh and many others who are still in Hokitika, 7The writer remembers some of the lady teachers, Misses Cole and Quin* lan (the latter wore a favourite green print dress) and Miss Helen Connon, After a successful career in Christ* church, Miss Connon married Professor , j Macmillan.-Brown and their daughter still is mentioned in connection with her father, but Airs Brown died many years ago. Her name is revered in Christchurch. The fee weekly at the Academy was 2s fid.
Whilst waiting for the building of the State School the Misses Annie and Florence Gatland held the Caxfon Club as the girls’ school. Infant classes were held at the Wesleyan Church old building, in Tancr-ed Street. Miss Edith Kennaugh being one of the teachers, who lived many years in America.
