TARIFF RETENTION

SOUGHT BY MANUFACTURERS

(Per Press Association—Copyright)

WELLINGTON, June 30.

The joint case on behalf of the New Zealand Manufacturers of Women’s underwear was ...represented before the Tariff Commission to-day by the representatives of three of the five major firms operating in the Dominion. >

They sought the retention of the present duty of 274 per cent, on United Kingdom Manufactures, 40 per cent, on remaining parts of the Empire, and 55 on foreign imports. The firms operating in New Zealand had a capital of £113,0C0, and were paying- wages amounting to £595 a week. j,.iC‘ 'wages of females in New Zealand were 34/10 a week as against 25/5 in England. Japanese competition was the subject of complaint and it was stated that, in many instance's, the price of the Japanese finished goods was lower than the cost that the New Zealand manufacturer had to pay for his material. The Japs made a cheaper article and their quality was good. Mr Murphy asked Mr Mander: Do you think that' you can cope with this by the tariff.

Mr Mander replied: Not by the tariff ■alone. The standard of living in Japan was very much lower than in New Zealand, and competition was unfair.

Mr Murohy; If that is so, practically the whole of international trade is unfair.
