MENACE TO GREY DUCKS

A reported increase of mallard, duck is not A’icAved with much satisfaction by some Otago sportsmen, avlio say that it really means the extinction of the Now Zealand grey duck.
A Taicri farmer, Avbo lias Avatebed the habits of the imported mallard for some years, stated that it breeds very readily with the grey duck, and that it i.s the dominating strain in the progeny. As a consequence, lie has found that there are now very few grey ducks on the Taieri Plain, and he believes that one Avould noAV have to go .to th, e . back country around Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka to find the pure New Zealand bird. He gives it as his considered opinion that .in a few, years. the New Zealand grey duck Avill ba l only a name — that it is apparently too late now to try to combat .the position .brought about by importing the mallard 'to NeAv Zealand. He stated that lie has, also known the mallard To breedpwjth The domestic duck. 1
