The opinion that matters commercially are picking up, .and that the world is on the eve of an era of gradually increasing prosperity, was expressed by Mr Julian; M. Foster, United States Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, who aviis one of the miests of honour at a farewell luncheon tendered by the English ’Speaking Union to-day.
Mr Foster said that undoubtedly the two leaders in tile reconstruct lion era Avould be the United States and Britain. He thought the future of the world depended on the friendship of the. people of these tAvo countries, and it had never been as close as it Avas to-day. The American .Consul-General,. Mr Calvin Hitch, said the closing of the American Trade Commissioner’s office in Wellington Avas due to no dissatisfaction on the part of the Government Avith the conduct of the affairs of the office, but was solely a matter of economy.
