A request for a reduction of duties on imported carpets was made to the Tariff Commission by William Manson. manager for James Temple and Co., who considered 25 per cent, excessive for revenue purposes, and afforded unnecessarily high protection to local industry. 11c said there was only one New Zealand'.manufacturer, and he practically confined his activities to making reversible rugs. A reasonable protection would be fifteen per cent. They would like to- see, said the witness, some method deviled whereby protection to the local manufacturer would bo restricted to the particular articles lie wag producing.
