T’ne form of control by tub education Department lias long been under review, ana there is reason to believe that an important change is under consideration, winch may iiivdive an alteration in functions at present exercised by senior omcers under the Minister. Suggestions have been made for the appointment of two senior executive omcers who would work along similar lines to the heads of certain other departments where professional a nd business sides are administered separately as far as possible. The Railways Department is without a general manager. An appoihtment to this position is expected to be, confirmed by the' Governor-General within a fortnight. It is generally anticipated Mi - J. H. Mackley, the assistant-general manager, will be promoted. ’ The retirement of the Government printer, Mr Skinner, is. expected vu be announced shortly. Mr Skinner, has had forty-four years’ service. Another senior officer . expected to retire within a few months is the Comptroller of Customs, Doctor Craig, who has 41 years’ service. ' " The retirement of the Controller and Auditor-GeneFal, ' Colonel Campbell, is pending. Colonel , Campbell recently suffered an illness, r and it is understooa he asked to be relieved of his duties some time ago.

Mr T. Brook, Valuer-General,, has had 41 years’ service, and it is possible lie will retire shortly.
