HASTINGS, March 25,
Fatal injuries, caused by the explosion of a. patent fire extinguisher, were sustained by a clerk, William David Kenney, aged 37 years, on Saturday evening. The deceased was on duty in the mailroom at Hastings Post Office with two other clerks, when a fire broke out in a small shed at the rear of the main building.
The fire brigade were summoned, but in the meantime, three men procured extinguishers. Kenney bumped an extinguisher of The soda and acid type ill the ground, apparently in an attempt to make it work, as he thought that it was blocked. A slight trickle of liquid had just began to issue lrom it, when there was a loud explosion, and a spurt of flame. The deceased was sitting on the floor at the time when the explosion occurred. He attempted to rise, but he fell back, being obviously in great agony.
