SWIMMERS AND SHARK

GISBORNE, March 20.
While enjoying ia : S'Wiin t-t TVarnui Bec.cn- two members ol : the Australian team ut p.csemi visiting U.sborne, Messrs Owen ; Griffiths; and Carl Phillips, received a fright through the appearance, of a shark- and lost no im.t' in getting to' the shore.
'.The two swimmers woe just outside the line of breakers at ;; the time, waiting for a roller on which to ride in, whei.i one of them: noticed the shark and, colling out to his . companion, made off in haste toward land. The other swimmer, wasted 1:0 time in following him and both reached shallow water iafitsr a. fast sprint, in which all--previous records weffe prob-. ably eclipsed. The shark was then only a few yards away, and although it gave no indication of attacking, the visitors, with visions of Sydney sharks before them, did not stop to inquire its intentions.
