TOURIST BUREAU OFFICE. A GESTURE OF PROTEST. AUCKLAND, February 24. W T liile Queen Street was crowded with shoppers about three o’clock yesterday afternoon, a young man threw a large stone through the plate-glass window of the ' Government Tourist Bureau, damaging the . glass, which was valued at about £4O, beyond repair. The stone landed near a placard bearing the words, “Enjoy the.thrill of landing a swordfish!” and slightly damaged the dorsal fin of the stuffed specimen of. a magnificent swordfish. A crowd gathered, but the man made :no attempt to run away. An elderly gentleman poked him .in the ribs with hi 8 umbrella and asked him what lie threw the stone for. The man had ; started to make a speech when a departmental officer rush out and shouted “Who did that?”

He was taken inside the office and given a chair, Ho said he was out of work and threw the stone ns a protest against being sent to a relief camp in the country, The man declared that rather than go into camp he had gone to a police station and asked to he lodged in the cells. The police refused to do this, so lie walked down Queen Street with a stone in his pocket- and threw it at the most imposing window he could find in a Government building as a gesture of protest. Later the man was arrested.
