SMUGGLING SILK
TRAP TO FOIL PILFERERS.
' VIENNA, January 23. A. Customs official, noticing a. large locked metal container in a washroom of the Paris-Bucharest train, forced it open and found several packages of
smuggled silk. As lie withdrew them, he overturned a large flask of sulphuric acid. Jumping aside, lie escaped with burneu hands and damaged clothes. Following up this clue, the Customs authorities of Austria, Rumania, ' and France discovered smuggling of sills, into Rumania had" been carried on for several months on a large scale. The smugglers noticing that some packages failed to reach their destinations and suspecting pilfering, planted a bottle of acid in one of the metal
containers they so daringly placed on several trains.
