KANGAROO FIGHTS

DOG AND OWNER INJURED.

MAN’S CLOTHES IN TATTERS

MELBOURNE, February 9. Mr James Gross, a carrier employed at the Waterloo charcoal works, near Gisborne, Victoria, recently had an extraordinary encounter with a kangaroo in the bush. Hearing his Kelpie dog barking furiously in the forest, he went to ascertain the cause, and found that the dog had a big old man kangaroo bailed up. The dog was badly injured. Mr Cross went to the dog’s rescue, as it seemed determined not to give up the fight. ’The kangaroo next turned its attention to Mr Cross, who was badly mauled and had his clothes torn to rags.

Mr Cross, who is an elderly man, bv a well-directed blow on the animal’s head with a long stick, managed to escape being further mauled by the kangaroo. The injured dog now returned to his master’s assistance. The kangaroo got away, but not before it had been fatally injured.
