GOVT. MAKES INQUIRIES

l Per Press Association — Copyright.)

WELLINGTON, February 15,

Th e increase in the price of pettoi is at present th e .subject of an inquiry by the Government. Statements.' to this effect were made in th e House to-day by -Mr Forbes and Mr Coatee. Mr Stallworthy (Eden) declared that the new price would mean a serious increase in fares to th e travelling public and a further hindrance to the business community generally. In a question without notice Mr J. X. Massey (Frankton) asked Mr Forbes whether in view of the rise in price of petrol, and in view of the gap between the selling price in New Zealand and its cost elsewhere, the Government would institute an urgent inquiry, to be followed by whatever action might be appropriate. “The Government already has the matter under consideration, and inquiries are proceedings,” replied the Prime Minister.

Mr Stallworthy asked th e Minister of Customs to exempt from extra tax licensed bus operators in metropolitan areas. “As a result of higher exchange and additional tax,” the member added, “the retail price of petrol in Auckland has been advanced from Is lid to 2s Td a gallon.’’ In reply Mr Coates, said that having regard to the pressing needs for revenue much thought had been given to the question befor e the imposition of an increase in petrol tax was decided 'upon. “I regret that at the moment I am unable to hold out any hope in the direction asked for by the member,” added the Minister. “-As announced by the Prime Minister the Government has instituted inquiries into the position regarding the increased charge of fivepence a gallon.”
