ASTRONOMER ROYAL. SIR FRANK DYSON RETIRES. (British Official Wireless.) ■ RUGBY, December 23. The King has sanctioned the appointment of Mr Spencer Jones, Astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope Observatory, to be Astronomer Royal at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, in succession to Sir Frank Dyson, wno will retire from the Public Service on February 28. Sir Frank Dyson lias been Astronomer Royal since 1910. His successor has j&me a considerable amount of work in eo-peration with the Cape Observatory and discovered the new star Nova Victoria,

Oobtree Manor, -near Maidstone, which was “Dingley Dell” in the Pickwick Papers, was burnt early on Christmas morning.
The servants escap e d in night attire. The owner, Mrs Drake, who is over 80, was" carried from the bedroom by 'y. purse-companion. She was unharmed by the terrible experience
