The courts were slow after the heavy lain, but improved as the play progressed. Crawford was in brilliant form, and enhanced Australia’s prospects considerably. Hopman proved the surprise of the day, defeating Vines, th e world’s champion. Playing Vines bankhand, Hopman fought admirably. Vines appeared lethargic, but when roused, his cannonball service did not perturb Hopman. Vanryn shows a return to form, whilst Allison in' th e doubles was particularly’ (effective. McGrath wag playing well but his overhead wag weak against the American tosses. Gledhill is developing rapidly and will be America’s strongest against Australia’s second and third players. The fi km courts to-day reduced th© standard of play considerably.
