CHRISTCHURCH, November 14.
Harry Joseph Hogarth, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day and was charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. He pleaded guilt, > *
Chief Detective Carroll said »e accused had been under observation for some little time. When irresied he had in his possession a book recording 300 bets in sums of £4 down to 2/6. The accused said he was acting on behalf of someone else. Accused was fined £4O with costs. When accused asked for time to pay, Mr Mosley said he thought the person behind Hogarth should pay.
Hogarth: 1 ‘How do I get on if he doesn’t?”
The Magistrate: “You get three months’ imprisonment.” Hogarth was allowed 14 days in which to pay.
