GISBORNE, November 12.

The financial difficulties of Matakawa Council were discussed at. a meeting of the Council. The manager of the Bank of New. Zealand notified, he had stopped d'ebit operations till the overdraft was reduced to within. £IO,OOO. A company which had supplied the Council with materials .was., informed it was not possible to pay £175 owing. The Chairman stated the. Council .was unable "to- pay the County Clerics salary. The; Clerk reported he had telegraphed to the Under Secretary of Internal Affairs Department regarding the position and. had received a reply that the Under Secretary was. unable at present to give an indication of the financial proposals for the Council.

T.ie Council l decided to await further advances from the Department.
