The Assistant-Minister of Labour Mr ua» mas, speaking in tbe- city, said that if it had not been for impositions it would be possible to give more liberal relief in cases of genuine disci ess. , Official investigations had disclosed that recently, while the State' was spending £5 millioil per annum on relief, 20 to 25 per cent was going td impostors.

The cost of, social services in this State was equal to £3 10s per head of population. In no other State did it exceed £2. The Government, in endeavouring to balance its Budget, had to choose between keeping the benefits at a lower standard a!id reaching a point at which payments could not be met.
