INFANT’S DEATH
MURDER CHARGE AGAINST DOCTOR IN AUCKLAND, (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, October 18. The charge against him of committing homicide was to-day amended to one of murder, when. Georg e Frederick Hewer, aged 39, described as a doctor, appeared in the police court. Hewer was charged with killing, by an unlawful act, on or about October 3rd, ah infant, thereby committing murder ■ and also with th 6 unlawful use of an instrument on September 25th. An inquest concerning the death of the infant was also commenced with the hearing of the case. The results of a post mortem examination of the body of th e male child were described by Dr D. X. W. Murray who saiu that' there were no external marks of violence on the infant. “The child had breathed and had lived for some little time,” the wituegs continued. “There was no disease present to prevent the child from living, had it been born at full time. Immature birth lessened its chance of living.” The mother of the youpg woman involved in the case,. .Mated that she visited the accused at hia rooms in the city on thq morning of September 21st:. and described her daughter’* condition to Hewer, Witness said that Heuer was very reluctant to take the girl. Witness paid a second visit to the accused on the following Friday, her daughter then accompanying her. Hewer said that the price for. the. operation would be £2O. Witness said that she coubl not pay that amount, and Hewer agreed to an offer of £lO. Her daughter called again later hi the day. Th e hearing was adjourned.
