COUNTY COUNCIL

FINANCE MEETING BUSINESS DEALT WITH. The Finance Committee of the Westland County ouneil met last evening at 7.30 o’clock. Present:—Messrs J. A. Murdoch (County Chairman), W. .Jeffries, W. Gearle, W. A. Jamieson and M. Keenan. Accounts amounting to £1665 17s 4d (vviieieof £855 13, chiefly unemployment had been paid) were passed for payment. OTHER BUSINESS. Special correspondence was dealt with as follows: Telegrams to and from the Prime Minister objecting to the closing oi the Land Transfer and Stamp Office at Hokitika were approved. K was resolved in the event of a deputation beino-.sent to Wellington on the matter that Mr Jeffries represent the Council as Mr Murdoch would retpresent the Law Society. From Singer, Lester and Dempsey, asking grant for explosives to assist in forming tracks in the upper reaches of Whitcombe and Hokitika rivers to fateilitate prospecting.—Request refused. From F. Heveldt, forwarding £ls subsidy for repairs to Teal Duck Track in Okarito district,—Received with thanks, From Public W’orks Lopartment, approving of specifications prepared for metalling on the Kumara JunctionChesterfield road. Received; the work to be commenced. From same, returning specifications for Petersen Road work, and asking for some alterations to be made.—Received and referred back for amendments to be made.

From T. Nolan, Matainui, giving explanation to matter of bridge repairs, Wiataroa Gorge.—Received and £2 passed for payment. From or. Donovan, forwarding resignation of T. Sexton, ferryman at 3 Mile Creek, and application of W. McCluggage for position.—Received and appointment made. Fli-oni Overhcer Millner reporting on state of Wataroa foot bridge, and recommending a total expenditure not exceeding £25 15s.—Approved. From Or. McKay, recommending favourable consideration to John Diedrichs, for drainage on his property, Harihari.—Received'; no action. From Overseer Millner, reporting request of A. Griffin for drainage across Christchurch roiad, was on the Main Highways and under- control of • the Public Works Department.—Received and referred to- Public Works Department. , From Main Highways Board, circular covering main highways maintenance for the year 1932-33. —Received. From Unemployment Board, amending the rates of unemployment.—Received. From Grey Harbour Board', asking representations be made to Govern* meat to continue subsidy payment of £12,000.—-Received and request granted. From Hokitika Golf Club, requesting permission to erect gates at Links. —Bequest o-mnted. From Commissioner Crown Lands, re culvert near Agnew’s property, Blue Spur road.—Left to Chairman to deal with. From Minister Public Works acknowledging letter re "rant for road to Waiatoto river, advising proposals being investigated 1 with view to obtaining particulars of estimated cost.—Received. From W. Bierwirth, advising Alt. Greenland track blocked with trees, asking for access.—Received; mo action. The tender of Atlantic Union for the supply of benzine for six months was accepted. Mr E. T. S'toon was [appointed acting Treasurer and to sign cheques. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Progress of work on County Roads during the month of September 1932. NORTHERN RIDING. Unemployed labour was usefully engaged in removing loose stones from Kumara Junction-Chesterfield Road, constructing a drain, and assisting to fill gravel for repairs to the Alain Highway, clearing, cleaning watertable;, renewing a defective culvert with small concrete pipes, and repairing Terem.ik.au Settlement Road, clearing and repairing Kumara Road, widening a portion of the Main Highway between Stafford and' Goldsborough, clearing and repairng Awatuna Road; clearing, repairing, and levelling Arahnra Valley 7 Road assisting Air R. Bradley in constructing a portion of Spencer Road, repairing Blue-Spur-Arahutfa Road, also assisting to fill gravel for Arahura. \ alley, and One Mile Road repairs. CENTRAL RIDING. Renairs were effected' to portions of Municipal, Station and Wall, Hokitika Flat, Sunny Bight, and South Hokitika Roads, a short drain was opened and a concrete pipe culvert constructed on Sunny Bight Rond, unemployed Jaltour being ut.li.ed on all the works. Unemployed! labour was solely 7 engaged extending the drain on Koffer 71 ngi Road, cleaning and widening a drain on Municipal Road, clcanand repairing a bye road leading to a farm on the south side of Cropp Rond, cleaning drains Black Creek and South Hokitika Roads, and cleaning water-tables Hokitika-Hau Bau Road, re-opening roiad dirainis, grubbing gorse and reducing high sides of Blue Spur

Road; also constructing a new drain on the eastern side of South Hokitika Road. SOUTHERN RIDING. Unemployed labour was engaged in metalling, andi widening a portion of Ruatapu Road Diversion, which is now completed, cleaning water-tables and grubbing gorse from- the lower end of Ruatapu Road, repairing defective culverts on Totara Road, and track, cleaning .drains Evans' Road, assisting the Roadman at Harihari, to re-open a drain on ; Petersen Roiad, cleaning Waiho and Okapi to Domains. The resident Roadman, ,attended • to repairs to Wanganui Flat and Petersen and various roads in the InterWanganui district, also to the construction of a platform culvert, leading to the residence of Mr G. Robertson, Harihari. Casual labour attended to remains to decking of Rotokino Road Bridges. The contractors for Purcell Road l improvement have completed the formation and metalling the specified distance. ' ' , .
