VICTIMISATION

AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. AUCKLAND ALLEGATION. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) HAMILTON, October 6. Speaking on academic freedom, Mr F. A. de la tVlare, a member of the New Zealand University Senate, made* a trenchant attack upon a circular issued by Sir George Fowlds to the staff of the Auckland University College, the effect of which was,' he said, to offend the innermost spirit of the University, to deprive the staff of part | of ,their rights as citizens, and the public of enlightened academic opinion and criticism. The Professorial Board was severely criticised for its acceptance oi such a document without a protest. Dealing with the alleged victimisation by the retrenchment of Dr J. Beaglehole, the Lecturer in History, who, with another member of th ? staff, defied the circular, the speaker reviewed the evidence as to tlie statement that the action taken was solely on grounds oi leconomy.
