Resuming the Address-in-Reply debate, Mr Atmore moved to amend the no confidence amendment by adding the following words—“ Owing to the Government’s action in decreasing old age, miners widows and other pensions.” Mr Black seconded the amendment vyhieh was defeated by 39 to 26 votes. Labour members together with Messrs Atmore, Rushworth and Tirikatine voted in favour of the amendment.

The leader of the Opposition’s amendment was defeated by 40 to 26, Labour members and Messrs Atmore, Rushworth and Tirikatene. again voting against the Government, The Address-in-Reply motion was then adopted. In contrast with the crowded galleries which listened in the House of Representatives to the reading of other budgets in recent years, there was a comparatively small attendance of the public last night when Hon. G. W. Forbes, in the absence of Mr Downie IS tew a r.t read l the 1932 Financial Statement.

The Estimates together with the Public Works Estimates were introduced hy Governor-General’s message. The Prime Minister rose at 8 p.m. and commenced reading the Financial 'Statement.

The reading of the budget occupied one hour and ten minutes. The statement was received in silence, the Prime Minister completing his task without being subjected to a single interjection. He was a,p*.plauded on resuming his seat. The House rose at 9.18 p.m. till 2.30 p.m. to-day.
