THE £2OOO TICKET A BAG SNATCHER. SMART POLICE WORK. ‘A sensation was caused yesterday afternoon when it became 'known that a robbery had taken plate at the residence of Miss M.. A.'Stop-' ftrth, the winner tf the A.201H) prize in No. 18 Art Union recently. It appears that about 2.30 o’clock, in answer to a knock, Miss Stopforth,' who was alone at her residence, went to the door where a well-dressed man said he wanted to speak to her an important financial matters. He would not speak, at the door, so she invited him in, and in answer to her inquiry, ' as to the nature of his business, he said he 'was hard up add wanted some money to get to Christchurch, at least, 13/- and then he would have to walk to Greymouth. Miss Stopforth said she had not much money in the house, but took a £1 note from her handbag and gave it to him. The man then left" and Miss Stopforth retired to another room. Returning later she found that her handbag was gone. It con-* v tained a purse with a £1 dote and some silver in it, and also - the winning ticket of the No. 18 Art - Union, worth £§ooo, with authority to - draw samp’ which came to hand by a recent post. Information.was at once given to thepolice, and following inquiries, COn- vstables Dougherty and Best went -bycar out the Arahura road and some ' three miles out at 4. p.m. arrested u >. fair haired man, corresponding, to the description /given, by Miss Stopforth, and subsequently secured the handbag ~ and the art union ticket. m' The man arrested is Basil Hodgson,, , of about 40 years of age. He recently been an in unite of the GreyHospital and was : at ; stranger to the • 'district., He had left-town by a taxi as far as the Menßil Hospital lower g gates and when arrested was walking in the direction of Greymouth. The prompt action, of the two local': Constables in making such a smart arrest is worthy of special notice. The man was brought to tlie local policestation where he was held for. the night. CHARGED AT COURT. A REMAND GRANTED. At the Magistrate’s Court this'morning before Mr W, Jeffries, J.U.,,, . the police charged Basil Hodgson with theft of one hand bag-valued at £2, a purse valued at 10s and cash amounting to £1 7s,- the property of Miss M. A. Stopforth. ' v Constable Best applied for a remand until Friday next, which w granted.
