CORRESPONDENCE

CREEK FISHERMEN. ' (To the Editor.) /. ' • • Sir, —Having read Interested’s letter in the columns of your paper, 1 would like a little space to answer his queries re whitebait regulations. . Until sometime last "week, , boat, fishing was quite legal but I can assure Interested that a person working; six days a week and only fishing • on ; Sundays cannot legally hold a register--ed trench. It is also illegal for a person holding such a trench to hawk whitebait for sale. Surely if the. Inspector of Fisheries can treat cases like this so leniently he would not be so biased as to interfere with a boat-fisherman who is fishing seven days a week for a living. I also note that Interested has intimated that the Inspector of Fisheries: and Rangers have! instructed him to, ' empty the boat-fishermen into thei creek. I can hardly believe that v man so fair as the Inspector of Fisheries would authorise such a thing when boat-fishing at the time was quite legal. I was rather pleased to read that Interested respected the law enough to refrain from putting himself in the position of being charged with assault, as the general public seem to have the impresison that this is unusual on the creek. Should the Inspector of Fisheries take Interested’s advice and go along the creek to get a “catch” I would also advise him to look into the matter of one day week fishermen holding registered trenches. Thanking you for your valuable space, I am etc. DOC. : i '
