MELANESIAN BISHOP

CONSECRATION CEREMONY. FIXED FOR NOVEMBER, - " ' AUCKLAND, September 12. The consecration of the Rev. W: H. Baddeley, of 'South Bank, Yorkshire, as Bishop of Melanesia, will tiake place at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Auckland, on St. Andrew’s Day, November 30. Mr Baddeley is expected to arrive at Auckland on November 28.

A proposal that Mir B’addeley should; be consecrated in England was under consideration. However, in view of the fact that all previous Bishops, of. Melanesia had been consecrated In New Zealand, it Was felt fitting that the tradition should be preserved. The last Bishop of Melanesia to be consecrated In Auckland was the Rt. Rev, Cecil Wilson, the eeranony taking place at St, Mary's Cathedral on* June 11, 1894. The first Bishop of Melanesia was John Coleridge Pat* teson, who was consecrated at Auckland in 1871. His successors were' Bishops .J. R. Selwyn, Cecil Wilson, O. J. Wood,, J. M. (Steward, and F. M. Mtolynaux. Mir Baddf:{by will thus be the seventh bishop of the vast island diocese.

For the convenience of the .bishops attending the Standing Committee of General Synod in Wellington in August, the last two bishops of Melanesia were consecrated there, while Bishop Wood was consecrated in Dunedin. However, in view of Auckland’s long connection with the Melanesian Mission, it was thought appropriate on the present occasion that the ceremony should take place here. It is hoped that all the bishops of the Anglican province of blew Zealand will' be able to attend the consecration ceremony. However, the consecrating of the new- portion of the Nelson Cathedral will take, place, three days later, and it, may be impossible for Bishop Sadlier to visit Auckland.

The Melanesian Mission’s new twinscrew motor-vessel Southern Cross is expected .at Auckland about September 28. Archbishop. Averill said yesterday that the vessel would have to leave for the Islands about a fortnight later and would be unable to await the arrival of the new ]jishop.
