SHOOTING AFFRAY
ROSS SENSATION
MAN WOUNDED IN GROIN.

ROSS, September 8. A sensation was caused in Ross
at 1 o’clock this morning when it became known that, following a dispute, a man named T, A,.8. Potter, had been shot in the flank.
From infovijiatidn available jt : appears that last night three men, T. A. B. Potter, C. R, Highet, and George. Muir, had been together and were on their way home when a dispute arose. George Muir, who is a well-known resident, left the other two men, who proceeded to their home in Woodlouse Street.
Muir came back with a pea rifle in his hand, and is stated to have shot Potter in the left groin. The two men ran into their hut as fast as they could and shut the door and put out the light. Muir called to 1 them to come and he would shoot them. The men remained quiet, and after some time, Muir went away towards his home. One of the men, Highet, then came out atid went to the Police Station where he informed the Constable in charge of the happenings, Attention was given to Potter who was.later brought to the Westland Hospital for treatment. Later, George Muir - was arrested, and was sent on to Hokitika to-day by train.
The happening caused a great sensation in the township., Potter, the injured man, is about 50 years- of age, and has been in the Ross district for about three months, having come to the locality under the unemployment prospecting scheme. On inquiry at the Westland Hospital before noon, we were informed that Potter, on admission to the hospital, had been operated upon. The bullet had entered the left flank below the ribs and had lodged in the abdomen, perforating the large' intestine on the way. The patient was over the operation and doing as well as could be expected blit his condition was very serious.
