ANOTHER MISHAP

GAR WOOD WINS HARMSWORTH TROPHY RACE. (United Preso Association—By Electric jLeiegrapn—(Jopyrigb i.j (Received tiim u ay at 9.25 a.m, DETROIT, September 5. Another motor misimp disabled Miss England 111. permitting (jar Wood to retain the jtlannsworth Trupny without even tne shadow of .. a race. The; fouling of spark piugs caused tiustoppage of Kaye Don's starboaid engine at the end of the first mile,- producing such a strain on the other engine as to make continuation impossible ; compelling the Englishman to withdraw from the race, and permitting the American to cover the requisite seven laps of the thirty-five mile course at 69.036 miles an hour to win a hollow victory. The water was quiet this morning, and conditions were ideal. Don on the start had a slight lead, and as both boats roared to the turn tfie English craft)’s superiority ,eeempd indicated, as on Saturday. However, MisS America went into tlie lead on the turn, aild the spectators once more sensed that the English craft was in' trouble. Miss England slowed down in the second lap and idled in the swell, as Don and Garner worked frantically to make repairs. Their, efforts were clearly unavailing, and the crew signalled lor a service boat which went out and towed the craft in.

Don, after the race, explained the engine failure, and expressed disappointment. He added: “Personally, 1 want to come again but that depends on Lord Wakefield.” Wood said: .“I am happy to have won, but sincerely regret Don’s breakdown. It is fine to win, bift I would have liked to race over the full course. Don and Lord Wakefield have my sincere regrets.” .
