DESCRIPTION OF DON’S BOAT.
Miss England 111. was designed and built by John I. Thornycroft, and Co., Limited, at Hampton-on-Thames. It is a single-step vessel and, unlike Miss England 11., is fitted with two propellers, a part of the design which was much criticised by some experts and yet has proved right. The boat is now fitted with two Schneider Trophy type super-charged Rolls-Royce engines. At 3200 revolutions each of these engines develops 2200 h.p. Fuel consumption is at the rate of five gallons a minutes at full speed, and Miss England carried 250 gallo’hs—enough for about 40 minutes;. under favourable conditions. ■» .
. The length of the hull of the boat is 35ft, and the inaxilnilin beam is 9ft 6in. Tile wood used in construction . Is and there are two skins, As with Miss England 11. there Is a forward rudder in addition to that normally fitted. The gearboxes and the transmission are water-cooled with special scoops on tbe forward end of the step. For engine cooling at low speeds (under 40 miles an hour) hand pumps are fitted. The propellers \ are of (steel, and it may be noted that small as they are they cost'about £SOO apiece. Much of the talk o° the cost of Miss England 111. is idle, but there is little doubt that she has ; cost much more than Shamrock V. to build and test. Fast motor-boat racing is not a poor man’s amusement, and Lord Wakefield should earn tbe full gratitude of British sportsmen for all that he has done to capture the world’s mechanical speed records.
