BROWN TROUT OVA

FOR HATCHERY AT KANIERI. CONSIGNMENT OF 150,000 OVA. A consignment pf . 150,000 brown trout ova arrived on Tuesday from /■lnvercargill Ifor Lake Kanieri 'Hatchery. Owing to the fact that fre consignment did not arrive in Christchurch in time to connect with Saturday's express, the ova had to remain in Christchurch ove>- the rveek-eud and did not arrive in Hokitika until Tuesday morning. Consequently one box of ova which was more advanced the other two boxes, a big percentage c* fish hatched out pa the •journey, a lthough the boxes did -not contain the ice and damp moss which usually accompanies the packing of ova, the advent of .the fry into a “dry area”, did riot seem to have a very harmful effect, as The percentage of mortality was not any more than is usual with brown trout ova.

During the recent alterations to the, intake of the Kanieri Fi’ectric Coy’s water race at Lake Kanieri, the . hat* chery committee found it necessary to arrange for an auxiliary water supply for the.'hatchery, as the water was. to be turned off lot* 4 short period in the race from which the hatchery gets its supply. Caving to the fact that a good deal' of cement work was done Rfc the intake, it would have been fatal M the young fry in the hatchery to use the water until a full fortnight after the race was again turned on, ]as the presence of lime from the cemented intake would have' prevented the aeration of the water so nece'seary to the young fish.

Fortunately the cid pipe line of the borough water supply was able to be repaired and ■ brought into commission thus giving a full and plentiful supply to tide over th e difficulty. By a peculiar coincidence, during the last weekend. t' N e water in the lak° had so lowered during the fine spell, that the old pipe line was not giving an adequate ‘supply and the Ka-nieri Electric Coy’s water race had again to be resorted to, but as .all danger from lime had then pasfed the hatchery water supply suffered no serious interruption-
