MEAT QUOTA FIGHTS
BY DOMINIONS MR COATES IS RETICENT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) OTTAWA, August 13.' Mr Bruce (Australia) and Mr Coates (New Zealand) had their most trying day of the 'whole Conference to-; «4ay. They were closeted with British Ministers from nine in the morning tiiii, fiVe at* night. Then Mr Bruce rushed to a golf course to take his mind, off the ordeal. Meat wars-are raging, as the cables of the past few days have indicated. Mr Coates is discreetly silent regarding the meat Hie has authorised the following brief communique “Discussions oil dairy products, meat and fruit are well advanced, arid Mr Coates and the other Dominion Ministers are in constant consultation with the British Ministers, and are hopeful that a most satisfactory arrangement will be made.”
This carefully covers the tightness of the situation, in which Mr Coates has not relaxed momentarily lii9 efforts to put New Zealand’s case; successfully. Mr., Coates, commenting on , the Gurrenoy Report, stated: "It is a.’ valuable contribution, embodying a pronouncement by Mir Chamberlain which is even of greiatey significance- than at first* appears, Cautiously' guarded in expression; it definitely accepts, the iaisi.r.i/ of prices as an object of Britain’s' monetary t polioy. Nothing can be more; valuable to New Zealand producers; The discussions leading to this report convinced m© that action will be taken to ensure a revival of prices. There is nothing in the report prejudicing New Zealand’s power to regulate her own monetary affairs. I welcome Mr Chamberlain’s declaration as marking a milestone in imperial cooperation, and as turning away from the disastrous deflationary policy or drift- of the past two years.”
