COMMUNIST PLOT
AGAINST U.S, BANKS' (United Press Association—By Eiectru: Telegraph—Copyright.) CHICAGO, July 28. What appeared to have been a nation wide plot to undermine banks, was revealed by Federal agents -who raided the hotel room of George Rowland, an alleged Communist, at Pontiac, Michigan, and found a number of documents detailing “a whispering campaign’’ against banks throughout the Middle West. It is understood the technique of the so-called Communists consisted of' clandestinely telephoning to heavy depositers declaring various banks unsafe and were expected to close. It is believed that such tactics were responsible for heavy withdrawals in June, from a number of Chicago banks, many of which failed.
