In tlie amateur championships at White City, the hundred-yards sprint \yas, won by F. P. Reid in 9 9-10 secs. Page,, the holder wag second. Tlie 220yds w-as >von by Reid in 22 sees. In the quarter mile, C. M. Stoneley won in 49 4-5 secs. T. Hampson was second. The half mile was won by T. Hampson (the holder) in 116 2-5 secs. The mile was won by J. F. Cornes in 254 1-5 secs, the New Zealander, Lovelock, being second, and Ellis (exchampion) third. , In tlie three miles W. J. Beavers won in 4min 23 1-5 secs, J.*. Burns (the holder) being second. The two miles steplechase resulted.: T. Even son (holder) 10 minutes 13 4-5 secs Ist; Ba-yley (Empire Champion) 2ml
The 120 yds hurdles was won hv D. O. i> mlay in 14 9-10 secs, and the quarter mile hurdles by Lord Burghley in 54 3-5 secs. In the weight putting the -South African, H. Hart, won with 48 ft 51 inches. . -:
The championships, which were tantamount to ..the Olympic trials, were disappointing, owing to the absence of foreign entries, and -also of Lieutenant Rampling (holder of the quarter mile .championship) and' Thomas (holder of the mile championship), both British hopes, owing to strained muscles. In the absence of. Thomas, Lovelock was -expected to win the mile. He took the lead at half way, but the o,'AnWi, C'ornes, challenged at the last* two hundred yards, and after..a desperate struggle in the 1 straight, yon bv a yard. , ;
