“In view of the encouraging results of tobacco growing to dafe, and the 2s per pound advantage given by Britain to Empire-gjrown, Ifcaf over foreign leaf, the further production of tobacco in New Zealand is a risk which might well be taken,” said Mr J. A. Campbell, the Director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture, in an. address at the Rotary Club. That New Zealand could grow good tobacco was exemplified, he said, by the quality of the tobacco now being produced.' During the past few years, a very substantial .internal, trade in tobacco had been ' built up, amounting to something in excess of £150,000 in value. The local production of leaf was mainly being carried on under contract with the leading tobacco manufacturers of the Dominion. This ment that there were yet no growers or organisations free to grow tobacco of a suitable quality for - the purpose of testing the overseas trade. Mr Campbell stated further that his Department had under consideration a plan to give Instruction in tobacco growing in connection with the small farm scheme, outlined by the Minister of Unemployed. He said that buyers had already given a fairly large order for leaf. The instruction to be given would enable the growers to produce the varieties of tobacco most suitable for the market, and particularly for export,
