PALMERSTON N., June 22.
Fire totally3destroyed • the stewards’ stand, a two s'tprey building, owned by the Manawatu Facing Club, at the Awapuni racecourse this morning about one o’clock, although strenuous efforts were made to save the structure, the flames had too good a hold when discovered.
The alarm was raised by the sound of explosions, believed to be the firing of cartridges used as humane killer, kept in the stand.
The cause of the outbreak is unknown, but it mav lm.ve been due to lightning,' as a strong flash of lightning was responsib’e for the fusing of an e’ectric iron at the caretaker’s residence nearby. The seat of the fire was in the upper storey of the building which is twentythree years old. The contents were insured for £3,900. but it is expected that the Club will be heavy losers.
