The unemployment registrations for New Zealand for tllie week ended June 6th totalled 54,027, as compared with -53,513 for the previous ’seven days. There was an increase of 484. Th ; s is the highest figure ever recorded. r |’lie total number of unemployed for the week under review includes /40,871 men who were employed on the No. 5 Scheme, leaving 13,153 standing down or unplaced. Since May 2 the registrations for the whole of the have increased by 3934, from 50,093 to 54,027.
CHARITY TROiiING MEETING. TO HELP DISTRESS FUND. CHRISTCHURCH, June 9. A permit has been granted to the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association by tlhe Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Hamilton, to held a trotting meeting at Addington on Saturday, July 16th, for charity. The proceeds are to be equally divided between the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan's Relief of Distress Fund, and the Citizens’ Relief Association. All of the services at the meeting will be gratuitous. There will be a programme of seven events, and £725 will be given in prizes.
relief of unemployment. CONSIDERED BY HOSPITAL BOARDS. WELLINGTON, June 10. Mr Wallace, President of the Hospital Boards’ Conference announced to the conference this morning that a satisfactory arrangement had been made with tlie Hon. J. G. Coates in respect to tile position which arises between tlie Government and Boards as to the unemployment of A., 8., and C classes of the unemployed. Representatives of the Boards met Mr Coates this morning, he said, and Mr Coates had agreed to accept class B men as the only class. Boards would be responsible for class C men, men who, under normal conditions, could not earn their own living, or in other ordinary charitable aid cases. The conference set up a committee to bring down a report on the remits dealing with unemployment relief.
